Weekend (Saturday)

Final Presentation: Saturday, July 19, 1 pm at the Academy of Music Theatre. All S.M.T.I. participants will receive a package of professional theater headshots to be taken by Ellen Augarten during the program. All participants will receive a recording of the final presentation.

Auditions

Entrance to the Summer Musical Theater Intensive is determined by painless audition. Please contact Program Director Jane Hanson at (413) 626-2343 or jane@JaneHansonProductions.com to schedule an audition. (Arrangements will be made for those who cannot travel for an in-person audition.) Past S.M.T.I. participants are NOT required to re-audition.

Faculty

Jane Hanson, Program Founder & Director, Lead Voice Instructor, Acting Instructor, received her B.M. in voice from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and her M.M. in choral conducting from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She is founder and director of Jane Hanson Productions, LLC, a company whose sole mission is joy and excellence through the performing arts. She has served as musical director for PACE Theater’s productions of “Fiddler On The Roof,” “Into the Woods,” “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” and “Godspell,” and is currently working on a hip-hop inflected version of “West Side Story.” She has also music-directed operas for Old Deerfield Productions, including performances of Paula Kimper’s opera The Captivaton of Eunice Williams at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Ms. Hanson has served on the faculty of UMass Amherst’s Department of Music and Dance, the Northampton Community Music Center, and the Williston Northampton School. Through her company The Proficient Musician, a division of Jane Hanson Productions, LLC, Ms. Hanson offers private voice instruction, masterclasses, professional development seminars, residencies, and voiceprograms for teens.

Alexandra Borrie, Lead Acting Instructor, celebrates 40 years as a professional actor-singer-dancer. She has had a long and varied performance career on Broadway, in regional theatres and in television. She began her career as a ballet dancer and most recently sang annual classical repertoire with the Oratorio Society of NY at Carnegie Hall. She made her Broadway debut in Stephen Sondheim’s Follies, received rave reviews for her performance in The Shadow Box, directed by Richardtelevision career with Pierce Brosnan in Remington Steele. An acting teacher/music theatre specialist of 18 years, her teaching credits include: the NYU Tisch School for the Arts Undergraduate Program (studio CAP 21), the NY School for Film and Television, The Music Conservatory of Westchester, Lecturer in Drama at Muhlenberg College, and the American Music and Dramatic Academy in NYC and Los Angeles. Ms. Borrie has worked with an impressive list of internationally known directors, conductors, dancers and actors, receiving acclaim for such varied roles as Cleo in "The Most Happy Fella" and Joan in George Bernard Shaw’s "Saint Joan." Currently Ms. Borrie coaches acting for music theatre performers and classical singers. She founded College Audition Preparation, which prepares college applicants for conservatory and college theatre program auditions.

Penny Herter, Lead Dance Instructor, is a renowned and experienced choreographer. She has worked on national and international Broadway tours, including Bob Fosse’s “Dancin’” and Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady.” Film and television credits include “A Chorus Line,” “So Fine,” the Academy Awards, and the Miss America Pageant. Locally, she has choreographed “Anything Goes” and “Seussical the Musical” at the Williston Northampton School and “Into the Woods,” “The Boyfriend,” and “Babes In Arms” at the Hartsbrook School. This is Penny’s fourth year with the S.M.T.I.
